The Dallas Observer reported that artist Steve Novak had a grotesque image in mind for the front lawn Halloween display he had planned.

“I’ve always been up to hijinks like flying ghosts or seven-foot tall snow sculptures of myself, so if I was gonna do Halloween, it was obvious that it should be hyperreal,” Novak told the publication. “No lights, fog machine, or camp … something that would really freak people out walking by in the dark. So I whipped up some dummies and slung 20 gallons of blood all over.”

Novak’s front lawn is so blood-splattered it could make Quentin Tarantino blush. One dummy hangs over the front of the roof, covered in blood with a machete to the head. Another lies in front of the porch with a giant safe where his head should be. There is a pool of blood surrounding the dummy.

Closer to the sidewalk is a dummy facedown with a chainsaw rammed through his back, with a wheelbarrow of human body parts not far off. There’s also a body bag.

It’s safe to say that despite the macabre display, Novak has a sense of humor. “A kid walked by and asked me what happened to them; I said they ate too many Skittles,” he quipped.

Novak revealed that his neighbors told him cop cars were in front of his decorated house frequently during the day, as many called to report the stranger-than-fiction scene. “I was only home twice to receive them. They told me they thought it was cool and that they were only there because they were required to reply to complaints from the sergeant,” he admitted.

Novak laughed, adding: “They were in formation at the door and when I opened it they asked me if it was all mine. I asked, ‘You mean the blood and the bodies? Yeah, that’s me.’”

His grim front lawn has cause a range of reactions all over Twitter. Some were very impressed. “This man is an artist,” one user said. “You can almost feel the embarrassment from that tidy house next door,” another joked.

“i will never create anything that rules half as hard as this,” a third person wrote.

Others were critical of the decor, calling it too realistic and inappropriate for a neighborhood. “If (sic) you’re Halloween decorations are a trigger warning then maybe it’s a little too far,” one user commented. “This is gross and inappropriate,” another chimed in.

Regardless of whether you find the display overkill (pun intended) or perfect for Halloween, you have to admit that the dedication is impressive.
