Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell lead the gripping rescue mission as British divers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen, who stepped in to lend their expertise to locate the trapped young boys and their coach. Alongside Mortensen and Farrell will be Obi-Wan Kenobi star Joel Edgerton, playing anesthetist Harry Harris. The notable figure quickly noticed the daunting challenge awaiting the divers and the junior football team, whose underwater journey to safety would take roughly three hours.
The new official Thirteen Lives trailer presents what is sure to be an engrossing adventure, setting the stage with footage of how the team became trapped in the tourist cave. Several conflicts are at play in the film, pushing its characters to combat the mental and physical obstacles standing rigidly in their way. “It takes a certain kind of mindset for the deep cave diving. You have to be a bit nuts,” expressed one character from the footage. The emblematic Mortensen and Farrell understand the beyond impossible nature of the dive but are willing to do so to bring the young boys and their coach safely home.
Thirteen Lives will be Howard’s first feature film release since 2020’s Netflix original film Hillbilly Elegy, which starred Amy Adams and Glenn Close. The Academy Award-winning director looks to deliver an engaging true story to audiences that will tap into every facet of one’s emotions while laying the critical foundation needed to understand the events that took place to navigate a complicated flooded cave system. To prepare for the role, Mortensen and Farrell trained with actual divers from the mission to add some realism so audiences could see the danger that awaited those entering the overflowing cave.
It’ll be interesting to see how audiences receive the upcoming Thirteen Lives film and if Howard can fully capture the essence of the moment from start to finish. The building of tension will be critical across the board to ensure that those aware of the true story still feel shocked and hooked into the harrowing rescue. The upcoming film will have a limited theatrical release on July 29th before it arrives exclusively on the streamer.
